In der Mathematik ist ein Kegelschnitt eine Kurve, die als Schnittpunkt eines Kegels mit einer Ebene erhalten wird. In der analytischen Geometrie kann ein Kegel als eine ebene algebraische Kurve von Grad 2 definiert werden. Es gibt eine Anzahl anderer geometrischer Definitionen möglich. Eines der nützlichsten, da es nur das Flugzeug beinhaltet, ist, dass ein Kegel aus jenen Punkten besteht, deren Abstände zu einem gewissen Punkt, der als Fokus bezeichnet wird, und eine Linie, die als Direktor bezeichnet wird, in einem festen Verhältnis, der Exzentrizität genannt wird. Traditionell sind die drei Arten von Kegelschnitt die Hyperbel, die Parabel und die Ellipse. Der Kreis ist ein Sonderfall der Ellipse und ist von aus eigenem Recht von ausreichender Bedeutung, daß er manchmal der vierte Kegelschnitt genannt wird. Die Art eines Kegels entspricht seiner Exzentrizität, diejenigen mit Exzentrizität, die weniger als 1 Ellipsen sind, diejenigen mit Exzentrizität gleich 1 Parabeln und diejenigen mit Exzentrizität größer als 1 Hyperbolas. In der Fokus-Directrix-Definition eines Kegelkreises ist der Kreis ein Begrenzungsfall mit Exzentrizität 0. In der modernen Geometrie sind gewisse degenerierte Fälle, wie die Vereinigung von zwei Linien, auch als Kegel enthalten.
