Coprolite
Ein Coprolit ist versteinerter Kot. Coprolites werden als Spurenfossilien im Gegensatz zu Körperfossilien klassifiziert, da sie das Verhalten des Tieres und nicht die Morphologie belegen. Der Name stammt aus den griechischen Wörtern κόπρος und λίθος. Sie wurden zuerst von William Buckland im Jahre 1829 beschrieben. Zuvor waren sie als "fossile Tannenzapfen" und "Bezoar Steine" bekannt. Sie dienen einem wertvollen Zweck in der Paläontologie, weil sie einen direkten Beweis für die Prädation und Ernährung von ausgestorbenen Organismen liefern. Coprolites können in der Größe von einigen Millimetern bis über 60 Zentimeter reichen. Coprolites, die sich von Palänen unterscheiden, sind versteinerter Tierdung. Wie andere Fossilien haben Coprolite viel von ihrer ursprünglichen Zusammensetzung durch Mineralablagerungen wie Silikate und Calciumcarbonate ersetzt. Paleofaeces hingegen behalten viel von ihrer ursprünglichen organischen Zusammensetzung und können rekonstituiert werden, um ihre ursprünglichen chemischen Eigenschaften zu bestimmen, obwohl in der Praxis der Begriff coprolite auch für altes menschliches Fäkalienmaterial in archäologischen Zusammenhängen verwendet wird.
