Cordierit oder Iolit ist ein Magnesium-Eisen-Aluminium-Cyclosilicat. Eisen ist fast immer vorhanden und eine feste Lösung besteht zwischen Mg-reichen Cordierit und Fe-reichen Sekaninait mit einer Reihenformel: 2Al3 bis 2Al3. Ein Hochtemperatur-Polymorph existiert, Indialit, das isostrukturell mit Beryl ist und eine zufällige Verteilung von Al in den 6O18-Ringen aufweist.
