Korfu
Korfu ist eine griechische Insel im Ionischen Meer. Es ist die zweitgrößte der Ionischen Inseln und bildet mit ihren kleinen Satelliteninseln den Rand der nordwestlichen Grenze Griechenlands. Die Insel ist Teil der regionalen Einheit Korfu und wird als Einzelgemeinde verwaltet. Die Gemeinde umfasst die Insel Korfu und die kleineren Inseln Ereikoussa, Mathraki und Othonoi. Die Hauptstadt der Insel und Sitz der Gemeinde heißt auch Korfu. Korfu ist die Heimat der Ionischen Universität. Die Insel ist mit der Geschichte Griechenlands vom Beginn der griechischen Mythologie verbunden. Sein griechischer Name, Kerkyra oder Korkyra, bezieht sich auf zwei mächtige Wassersymbole: Poseidon, Gott des Meeres und Asopos, ein wichtiges griechisches Festland. Nach dem Mythos verliebte sich Poseidon in die schöne Nymphe Korkyra, die Tochter von Asopus und die Fluss-Nymphe Metope, und entführte sie. Poseidon brachte Korkyra zu der bislang unbenannten Insel und bat in ehelicher Glückseligkeit ihren Namen an den Ort: Korkyra, der sich allmählich zu Kerkyra entwickelte. Gemeinsam hatten sie ein Kind, das sie Phaiax nannten, nach dem die Bewohner der Insel benannt wurden: Phaiakes.
