Der Begriff Strahl ist ein historischer Unfall, da kosmische Strahlen anfangs waren und falsch gedacht waren, um meistens elektromagnetische Strahlung zu sein. Im allgemeinen wissenschaftlichen Gebrauch werden hochenergetische Teilchen mit intrinsischer Masse als "kosmische" Strahlen bezeichnet, und Photonen, die Quanten elektromagnetischer Strahlung sind, sind durch ihre gemeinsamen Namen wie "Gammastrahlen" oder "Röntgenstrahlen" bekannt Ihre Frequenzen.
