Countershading, oder Thayer's Law, ist eine Form der Tarnung. Gegenschatten ist das Muster der Tierfärbung, in dem die Pigmentierung eines Tieres auf der Oberseite dunkler ist und an der Unterseite des Körpers leichter ist. Dieses Muster findet sich in vielen Arten von Säugetieren, Reptilien, Vögeln und Fischen und existiert seit mindestens der Kreidezeit. Wenn das Licht auf ein einheitlich gefärbtes Objekt wie eine Kugel von oben fällt, macht es die Oberseite heller und die Unterseite dunkler und stuft von einem zum anderen ab. Dieses Muster von Licht und Schatten macht das Objekt solide und wirkt daher als visuelles Stichwort, das das Objekt leichter zu erkennen macht. Countershading reduziert die Leichtigkeit der Erkennung von Raubtieren und Beute durch Ausgleich der Auswirkungen der Selbst-Shadowing, wieder typischerweise mit Abstufung von Dunkel zu Licht. In der Theorie könnte dies für die militärische Tarnung nützlich sein, aber in der Praxis wurde es selten angewendet, trotz der besten Bemühungen des Künstlers Abbott Handerson Thayer und Zoologen wie Hugh Cott. Ein verwandter Mechanismus, Gegenbeleuchtung, fügt die Schaffung von Licht durch Biolumineszenz oder Lampen, um die tatsächliche Helligkeit eines Hintergrundes entsprechen.
