Eine Grafschaft Palatine oder Pfalz war ein Gebiet, das von einem erblichen Adligen beherrscht wurde, der besondere Autorität und Autonomie aus dem Rest eines Königreichs oder Reiches besitzt. Der Name leitet sich aus dem lateinischen Adjektiv Palatinus, "im Zusammenhang mit dem Palast", aus dem Nomen Palatium, "Palast". Ein Herzogtum Pfalz ist ähnlich, aber wird von einem Herzog beherrscht, ein Edelmann von höherer Priorität als ein Graf oder Graf. Der Adlige schwor die Treue zum König und hatte doch die Macht, die Grafschaft weitgehend unabhängig vom König zu beherrschen. Es sollte daher von der feudalen Baronie unterschieden werden, die von dem König gehalten wurde, der keine solche unabhängige Autorität besaß. Herrscher der Grafschaften Palatine haben jedoch ihre eigenen feudalen Baronien geschaffen, die direkt von ihnen in Capite gehalten werden, wie die Baronie von Halton. Grafschaft Palatine Jurisdiktionen wurden in England unter der Herrschaft der normannischen Dynastie geschaffen. Auf Kontinentaleuropa haben sie einen früheren Termin.
