Pilot (Lokomotive)
In der Eisenbahn ist der Pilot das Gerät an der Vorderseite einer Lokomotive montiert, um Hindernisse von der Strecke abzulenken, die sonst den Zug entgleisen könnten. In manchen Ländern heißt es auch Cowcatcher oder Viehfänger. Neben dem Piloten werden neben den Rädern auch kleine Metallstäbe namens Lifeguards, Schienenwächter oder Wächter angebracht. Sie klopfen kleinere Hindernisse, die direkt auf der Lauffläche des Schienenkopfes liegen. Historisch eingezäunte Eisenbahnsysteme in Europa stützten sich ausschließlich auf diese Geräte und forderten den Einsatz von Piloten, aber dieses Design wird in modernen Systemen nur selten verwendet. Trams verwenden anstelle des Piloten ein Gerät namens Kotflügel. Gegenstände, die auf der Straßenbahnschiene liegen, werden von einer Sensorhalterung getroffen, die das Absenken eines korbförmigen Geräts auf den Boden auslöst, wodurch ein Überholen der Hindernisse verhindert wird, indem man es entlang der Straßenoberfläche vor den Rädern zieht. In schneebedeckten Gebieten hat der Pilot auch die Funktion eines Schneepfluges.
