Cowpea
Die Cowpea ist eine von mehreren Arten der weit gezüchteten Gattung Vigna. Es werden vier Unterarten erkannt, von denen drei kultiviert werden: Cowpeas sind eine der bedeutendsten Erbsenkulturen in den semiariden Tropen, die Asien, Afrika, Südeuropa und Mittel- und Südamerika abdecken. Eine Dürre-tolerante und warmwetterige Ernte, Cowpeas sind gut an die trockeneren Regionen der Tropen angepasst, wo andere Lebensmittel-Hülsenfrüchte nicht gut funktionieren. Es hat auch die nützliche Fähigkeit, atmosphärischen Stickstoff durch seine Wurzelknötchen zu fixieren, und es wächst gut in schlechten Böden mit mehr als 85% Sand und mit weniger als 0,2% organischer Substanz und niedrigem Phosphorgehalt. Darüber hinaus ist es schattentolerant, so ist kompatibel als ein Intercrop mit Mais, Hirse, Sorghum, Zuckerrohr und Baumwolle. Das macht die Cowpeas zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil traditioneller Intercropping-Systeme, vor allem in den komplexen und eleganten Subsistenzlandwirtschaftssystemen der Trocken-Savannen in Afrika südlich der Sahara. In diesen Systemen ist der Kraut der Cowpea ein wertvolles Nebenprodukt, das als Tierfutter verwendet wird. Forschung in Ghana festgestellt, dass die Auswahl der frühen Generationen von Cowpea-Kulturen zu erhöhen Ausbeute ist keine effektive Strategie.
