Für eine ebene Kurve, die als der Ort der Punkte f = 0 definiert ist, wobei f eine glatte Funktion der Variablen x und y ist, die über die reellen Zahlen reichen, ist eine Crunode der Kurve eine Singularität der Funktion f, wobei sowohl partielle Ableitungen als auch verschwinden. Weiterhin wird die Hessische Matrix der zweiten Ableitungen sowohl positive als auch negative Eigenwerte haben.
