Cryonics ist die Tieftemperatur-Erhaltung von Menschen, die nicht durch zeitgenössische Medizin aufrechterhalten werden können, mit der Hoffnung, dass Heilung und Reanimation in der Zukunft möglich sein können. Kryokonservierung von Menschen oder großen Tieren ist nicht reversibel mit der aktuellen Technologie. Die erklärte Begründung für die Kryonik ist, dass Menschen, die durch gegenwärtige gesetzliche oder medizinische Definitionen als tot betrachtet werden, nicht unbedingt tot sein müssen nach der strengeren informationstheoretischen Definition des Todes. Es wird vorgeschlagen, dass kryokonservierte Menschen irgendwann durch die Verwendung hochentwickelter Technologie wiederhergestellt werden könnten. Einige wissenschaftliche Literatur unterstützt die Machbarkeit von Kryonik. Ein offener Brief, der die Idee der Kryonik unterstützt, wurde von 63 Wissenschaftlern unterzeichnet, darunter Aubrey de Grey und Marvin Minsky. Doch viele andere Wissenschaftler betrachten Kryonik mit Skepsis. Ab 2013 sind etwa 270 Menschen Kryokonservierungsverfahren durchgemacht worden, seit Kryonik erstmals 1962 vorgeschlagen wurde. In den Vereinigten Staaten kann Kryonik nur gesetzlich am Menschen durchgeführt werden, nachdem sie rechtlich tot aufgehoben worden sind, da sonst es als Mord oder Selbstmord assoziiert wäre .
