Monokliner Cummingtonit ist kompositorisch ähnlich und polymorph mit orthorhombischem Anthophyllit, was eine viel häufiger Form von Magnesium-reichem Amphibol ist, wobei letzteres metastabil ist. Cummingtonite teilt wenig kompositorische Ähnlichkeiten mit Alkali-Amphibolen wie Arfvedsonit, Glaucophan-Riebeckit. Es gibt wenig Löslichkeit zwischen diesen Mineralien aufgrund unterschiedlicher Kristallgewohnheit und Unfähigkeit der Substitution zwischen Alkali-Elementen und ferro-magnesischen Elementen innerhalb der Amphibolstruktur.
