Keilschrift-Skript ist eines der frühesten bekannten Schriftsysteme, das sich durch seine keilförmigen Markierungen auf Tontafeln auszeichnet, die mit einem stumpfen Schilf für einen Stylus gemacht wurden. Der Name Keilschrift selbst bedeutet einfach "Keil geformt", aus dem lateinischen cuneus "Keil" und forma "Form", und kam in englischen Gebrauch wahrscheinlich aus alten französischen cunéiforme. Auftauchen in Sumer im späten 4. Jahrtausend v.Chr. Begann die Keilschrift als ein System von Piktogrammen. Im dritten Jahrtausend wurden die bildlichen Darstellungen vereinfacht und abstrakt, da die Zahl der Gebrauchsmuster kleiner wurde, von etwa 1.000 in der frühen Bronzezeit bis etwa 400 in der späten Bronzezeit. Das System besteht aus einer Kombination von logophonetischen, konsonanten alphabetischen und syllabischen Zeichen. Die ursprüngliche sumerische Schrift wurde für das Schreiben der Akkadischen, Eblaite, Elamit, Hethiter, Luwian, Hattic, Hurrian und Urartian Sprachen angepasst und inspirierte die Ugaritischen und Altpersischen Alphabete. Die Keilschrift wurde allmählich durch das phönizische Alphabet während des Neo-assyrischen Reiches ersetzt.
