In der klassischen Mythologie ist Cupid der Gott der Begierde, erotische Liebe, Anziehung und Zuneigung. Er wird oft als Sohn der Liebesgöttin Venus dargestellt und ist auch lateinisch bekannt als Amor. Sein griechisches Gegenstück ist Eros. Obwohl Eros in der klassischen griechischen Kunst als schlanker geflügelter Jugend erscheint, wurde er in der hellenistischen Zeit zunehmend als ein molliger Junge dargestellt. Während dieser Zeit erwarb seine Ikonographie den Bogen und den Pfeil, der seine Machtquelle repräsentiert: eine Person oder sogar eine Gottheit, die von Cupids Pfeil erschossen wird, ist mit unkontrollierbarem Wunsch erfüllt. In Mythen ist Cupid ein kleiner Charakter, der hauptsächlich dazu dient, die Handlung in Bewegung zu setzen. Er ist eine Hauptfigur nur in der Geschichte von Amor und Psyche, wenn er von seinen eigenen Waffen verwundet wird, erlebt er die Tortur der Liebe. Obwohl andere ausgedehnte Geschichten nicht über ihn erzählt werden, ist seine Tradition reich an poetischen Themen und visuellen Szenarien, wie "Liebe erobert alle" und die Vergeltungsstrafe oder Folter von Cupid. In der Kunst erscheint Cupid oft in Vielfachen als Amores oder Amorini in der späteren Terminologie der Kunstgeschichte, das Äquivalent der griechischen Erotik.
