Christian de Duve
Christian René, viscount de Duve war ein Nobelpreisträger Belgischer Zytologe und Biochemiker. Er wurde in der Themse Ditton, Surrey, Großbritannien, als Sohn der belgischen Flüchtlinge während des Ersten Weltkrieges geboren. Sie kehrten 1920 nach Belgien zurück. Er war der Gründungspräsident der prestigeträchtigen L'Oréal-UNESCO-Preise für Frauen in der Wissenschaft. Er machte serendipitous Entdeckungen von zwei eukaryotischen Organellen, Peroxisom und Lysosom, für die er den Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medizin 1974 mit Albert Claude und George E. Palade teilte. Er war mehrsprachig, in der Lage, Englisch, Französisch, Deutsch und Flämisch zu sprechen, und die Geschicklichkeit, die einst sein Leben rettete. Er starb in seiner gewählten Zeit am 4. Mai 2013 durch selbstinduzierte Sterbehilfe in Gegenwart aller seiner Kinder.
