Densitometrie ist die quantitative Messung der optischen Dichte in lichtempfindlichen Materialien, wie z. B. Fotopapier oder fotografischen Film, aufgrund von Belichtung. Die optische Dichte ist ein Ergebnis der Dunkelheit eines entwickelten Bildes und kann absolut als die Anzahl der dunklen Flecken in einem gegebenen Gebiet ausgedrückt werden, aber in der Regel ist es ein relativer Wert, ausgedrückt in einer Skala. Da die Dichte gewöhnlich durch die Abnahme der Lichtmenge gemessen wird, die durch einen transparenten Film leuchtet, wird sie auch als Absorptiometrie bezeichnet, das Maß der Lichtabsorption durch das Medium. Das entsprechende Messgerät wird als Densitometer bezeichnet. Der Logarithmus des Reziprokals der Durchlässigkeit wird als Absorption oder Dichte bezeichnet. DMax und DMin beziehen sich auf die maximale und minimale Dichte, die auf dem Material aufgezeichnet werden kann. Der Unterschied zwischen den beiden ist der Dichtebereich. Der Dichtebereich bezieht sich auf den Belichtungsbereich, der der Bereich der Lichtintensität ist, der durch die Aufzeichnung über die Hurter-Driffield-Kurve dargestellt wird.

Densitometry is the quantitative measurement of optical density in light-sensitive materials, such as photographic paper or photographic film, due to exposure to light. Optical density is a result of the darkness of a developed picture and can be expressed absolutely as the number of dark spots in a given area, but usually it is a relative value, expressed in a scale. Since density is usually measured by the decrease in the amount of light which shines through a transparent film, it is also called absorptiometry, the measure of light absorption through the medium. The corresponding measuring device is called a densitometer. The logarithm of the reciprocal of the transmittance is called the absorbance or density. DMax and DMin refer to the maximum and minimum density that can be recorded on the material. The difference between the two is the density range. The density range is related to the exposure range, which is the range of light intensity that is represented by the recording, via the Hurter–Driffield curve.
