Linguistische Beschreibung

Prescription versucht, Standardsprachenformen zu definieren und Ratschläge für eine effektive Sprachnutzung zu geben und kann als eine Präsentation der Früchte der deskriptiven Forschung in einer erlernbaren Form gedacht werden, obwohl sie auch auf subjektivere Aspekte der Sprachästhetik zurückgreift. Verschreibung und Beschreibung sind komplementär, haben aber unterschiedliche Prioritäten und sind manchmal im Konflikt zu sehen. Der Deskriptivismus ist der Glaube, dass die Beschreibung wichtiger oder wichtiger ist, zu lehren, zu studieren und zu üben als Rezept.
