Desorption ist ein Phänomen, bei dem eine Substanz von oder durch eine Oberfläche freigesetzt wird. Der Prozess ist das Gegenteil von Sorption. Dies geschieht in einem System, das im Zustand des Sorptionsgleichgewichts zwischen der Massephase und einer adsorbierenden Oberfläche liegt. Wenn die Konzentration der Substanz in der Massenphase abgesenkt wird, ändert sich ein Teil der sorbierten Substanz in den Massenzustand. In der Chemie, insbesondere der Chromatographie, ist die Desorption die Fähigkeit einer Chemikalie, sich mit der mobilen Phase zu bewegen. Je mehr eine Chemikalie entsorgt wird, desto unwahrscheinlicher wird sie adsorbieren, anstatt sich an die stationäre Phase zu kleben, bewegt sich die Chemikalie mit der Lösungsmittelfront. Bei chemischen Trennverfahren wird das Strippen auch als Desorption bezeichnet, da sich eine Komponente eines flüssigen Stroms durch Massentransfer in eine Dampfphase durch die Flüssigkeitsdampf-Grenzfläche bewegt. Nach der Adsorption bleibt die adsorbierte Chemikalie nahezu unbegrenzt auf dem Substrat, sofern die Temperatur niedrig bleibt. Wenn jedoch die Temperatur ansteigt, tritt auch die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Desorption auf.

Desorption is a phenomenon whereby a substance is released from or through a surface. The process is the opposite of sorption. This occurs in a system being in the state of sorption equilibrium between bulk phase and an adsorbing surface. When the concentration of substance in the bulk phase is lowered, some of the sorbed substance changes to the bulk state. In chemistry, especially chromatography, desorption is the ability for a chemical to move with the mobile phase. The more a chemical desorbs, the less likely it will adsorb, thus instead of sticking to the stationary phase, the chemical moves up with the solvent front. In chemical separation processes, stripping is also referred to as desorption as one component of a liquid stream moves by mass transfer into a vapor phase through the liquid-vapor interface. After adsorption, the adsorbed chemical will remain on the substrate nearly indefinitely, provided the temperature remains low. However,as the temperature rises, so does the likelihood of desorption occurring.
