In den meisten Haushaltskontexten bezieht sich der Begriff Waschmittel allein auf Waschmittel oder Spülmittel, im Gegensatz zu Handseife oder anderen Reinigungsmitteln. Detergenzien sind üblicherweise als Pulver oder konzentrierte Lösungen erhältlich. Detergenzien, wie Seifen, arbeiten, weil sie amphiphil sind: teils hydrophil und teilweise hydrophob. Ihre doppelte Natur erleichtert die Mischung von hydrophoben Verbindungen mit Wasser. Weil Luft nicht hydrophil ist, sind Waschmittel auch Schaummittel in unterschiedlichem Ausmaß.
