Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac OM FRS war ein englischer theoretischer Physiker, der grundlegende Beiträge zur frühen Entwicklung sowohl der Quantenmechanik als auch der Quantenelektrodynamik leistete. Er war der Lucasian Professor für Mathematik an der Universität von Cambridge, Mitglied des Zentrums für Theoretische Studien, Universität von Miami, und verbrachte das letzte Jahrzehnt seines Lebens an der Florida State University. Unter anderem entdeckte er die Dirac-Gleichung, die das Verhalten von Fermionen beschreibt und die Existenz von Antimaterie vorhergesagt hat. Dirac teilte den Nobelpreis für Physik für 1933 mit Erwin Schrödinger, "für die Entdeckung neuer produktiver Formen der Atomtheorie". Er hat auch Arbeit geleistet, die die Grundlage moderner Versuche bildet, die allgemeine Relativität mit der Quantenmechanik in Einklang zu bringen. Er wurde von seinen Freunden und Kollegen als ungewöhnlicher Charakter angesehen.
