Donatismus
Der Donatismus war eine christliche Sekte in der römischen Provinz Afrikas, die im vierten und fünften Jahrhundert unter Berberchristen blühte. Der Donatismus hatte seine Wurzeln im sozialen Druck unter der langjährigen christlichen Gemeinschaft des römischen Nordafrikas, während der Verfolgungen der Christen unter Diokletian. Die Donatisten waren Mitglieder einer schismatischen Kirche, die nicht in Gemeinschaft mit den Kirchen des Restes des frühen Christentums in der Spätantike war. Der Donatismus war ein indirektes Ergebnis der Verfolgung von Diokletian. Der Gouverneur von Afrika war der großen christlichen Minderheit unter seiner Herrschaft während der Verfolgungen nachsichtig gewesen. Er war zufrieden, als die Christen ihre Schriften als eine Zeichenabstimmung ihres Glaubens übergaben. Einige Christen begleiteten diese bequeme Handlung. Als die Verfolgungen jedoch zu Ende gingen, waren sie Marken-Traditoren, "diejenigen, die übergeben" von den Eifrigen, meistens aus den ärmeren Klassen. Wie die Novatianist-Schisma des vorigen Jahrhunderts waren die Donatisten Rigoristen und hielten fest, dass die Kirche eine Kirche von "Heiligen" sein sollte, nicht "Sünder", und dass Sakramente, wie die Taufe, die von Traditoren verwaltet wurden, ungültig waren.
