Seeigel
Seeigel oder Seeigel, die manchmal Meer-Igel genannt werden, sind kleine, stachelige, kugelförmige Tiere, die mit ihrer nahen Verwandtschaft wie Sanddollar die Klasse Echinoidea des Stachelhäuter-Phylums bilden. Etwa 950 Arten von Echinoiden bewohnen alle Ozeane von der Zwischenzeit bis 5000 m tief. Die Schale, oder "Test" von Seeigeln ist rund und stachelig, typischerweise von 3 bis 10 cm über. Gemeinsame Farben sind schwarze und stumpfe Grüntöne, oliv, braun, lila, blau und rot. Seeigel bewegen sich langsam und ernähren sich vor allem Algen. Seeotter, Seestern, Wolfsaale, Drückerfische und andere Raubtiere jagen und fressen Seeigel. Ihr roe ist eine Delikatesse in vielen Küchen. Der Name "urchin" ist ein alter Name für die runden Stachel-Igel, die Seeigel ähneln.
