Ectoprocta Die Bryozoen, auch bekannt als Polyzoa, Ectoprocta oder häufig als Moos Tiere, sind ein Phylum von tierischen wirbellosen Tieren. In der Regel etwa 0,5 Millimeter lang, sind sie Filterförderer, die Lebensmittelpartikel aus dem Wasser mit einem zurückziehbaren Lophophore, eine "Krone" von Tentakeln mit Cilien gesäumt. Die meisten marinen Arten leben in tropischen Gewässern, aber einige kommen in ozeanischen Gräben vor, und andere finden sich in polaren Gewässern. Eine Klasse lebt nur in einer Vielzahl von Süßwasser-Umgebungen, und ein paar Mitglieder einer meist marine Klasse bevorzugen Brackwasser. Über 4.000 lebende Arten sind bekannt. Eine Gattung ist einsam und der Rest Kolonial. Das Phylum wurde ursprünglich "Polyzoa" genannt, aber dieser Begriff wurde von "Bryozoa" im Jahre 1831 ersetzt. Eine weitere Gruppe von Tieren, die später entdeckt wurde, deren Filtermechanismus ähnlich aussah, wurde auch in "Bryozoa" bis 1869 eingeschlossen, als die beiden Gruppen festgestellt wurden Ganz anders sein. Die neu entdeckte Gruppe erhielt den Namen Entoprocta, während die ursprünglichen "Bryozoa" "Ectoprocta" genannt wurden. Allerdings ist "Bryozoa" der weit verbreitete Begriff für die letztere Gruppe geblieben.
