Ectotherm
Eine ectotherm, von der griechischen εκτός "außerhalb" und θερμός "heiß", ist ein Organismus, in dem interne physiologische Wärmequellen von relativ kleiner oder ziemlich vernachlässigbarer Bedeutung bei der Kontrolle der Körpertemperatur sind. Solche Organismen beruhen auf Umweltwärmequellen, die es ihnen ermöglichen, mit sehr ökonomischen metabolischen Raten zu arbeiten. Einige solche Tiere leben in Umgebungen, in denen die Temperaturen praktisch konstant sind, wie es für die Regionen des abgrundlichen Ozeans typisch ist. Im Gegensatz dazu, wo die Temperatur so weit variiert, um die physiologischen Aktivitäten anderer Arten von Ektothermen zu begrenzen, suchen viele Arten gewöhnlich externe Wärmequellen oder Schutz vor Hitze; Zum Beispiel regeln viele Reptilien ihre Körpertemperatur, indem sie sich in der Sonne sonnen oder Schatten suchen, wenn nötig zusätzlich zu einer ganzen Reihe anderer Verhaltens-Thermoregulationsmechanismen. Im Gegensatz zu den Ektothermen beruhen Endothermen weitgehend überwiegend auf Wärme aus internen Stoffwechselprozessen. Bei Ektothermen können schwankende Umgebungstemperaturen die Körpertemperatur beeinflussen.
