Sphäroid
Ein Sphäroid oder ein Ellipsoid der Umdrehung ist eine quadratische Oberfläche, die durch Drehen einer Ellipse um eine ihrer Hauptachsen erhalten wird; Mit anderen Worten ein Ellipsoid mit zwei gleichen Halbdurchmessern. Wenn die Ellipse um ihre Hauptachse gedreht wird, ist das Ergebnis ein prolate Sphäroid, wie ein American Football oder Rugby Ball. Wenn die Ellipse um ihre Nebenachse gedreht wird, ist das Ergebnis ein schiefes Sphäroid, wie eine Linse. Wenn die generierende Ellipse ein Kreis ist, ist das Ergebnis eine Kugel. Wegen der kombinierten Effekte von Gravitation und Rotation ist die Form der Erde grob diejenige einer Kugel, die in Richtung ihrer Achse leicht abgeflacht ist. Aus diesem Grund wird in der Kartographie die Erde oft von einem scharfen Sphäroid anstatt einer Kugel angenähert. Das aktuelle World Geodetic System Modell verwendet ein Sphäroid, dessen Radius 6.378.137 km am Äquator und 6.356.752 km an den Polen ist. Das Wort Sphäroid hatte ursprünglich einen ungefähr kugelförmigen Körper gemeint und das ist, wie es in einigen älteren Papieren auf Geodäsie verwendet wird. Um Verwirrung zu vermeiden, sollte Sphäroid als ein Ellipsoid der Revolution definiert werden, wenn das die beabsichtigte Bedeutung ist.
