Empirische Evidenz ist eine Wissensquelle, die durch Beobachtung oder Experimentieren erworben wurde. Der Begriff kommt aus dem griechischen Wort für Erfahrung, Εμπειρία. Empirische Beweise sind Informationen, die einen Glauben an die Wahrheit oder Falschheit eines empirischen Anspruchs rechtfertigen. In der empiristischen Betrachtung kann man behaupten, nur dann Wissen zu haben, wenn man einen wahren Glauben hat, der auf empirischen Beweisen beruht. Dies steht im Gegensatz zu der rationalistischen Sichtweise, unter der Vernunft oder Reflexion allein als Beweis für die Wahrheit oder Falschheit einiger Sätze gilt. Die Sinne sind die primäre Quelle der empirischen Beweise. Obwohl andere Quellen von Beweisen, wie Gedächtnis und das Zeugnis von anderen letztlich auf eine sensorische Erfahrung zurückverfolgen, werden sie als sekundär oder indirekt betrachtet. In einem anderen Sinne können empirische Beweise gleichbedeutend mit dem Ergebnis eines Experiments sein. In diesem Sinne ist ein empirisches Ergebnis eine einheitliche Bestätigung. In diesem Zusammenhang wird der Begriff semi-empirisch verwendet, um theoretische Methoden zu qualifizieren, die zum Teil grundlegende Axiome oder postulierte wissenschaftliche Gesetze und experimentelle Ergebnisse verwenden.
