Enaktive Schnittstellen sind interaktive Systeme, die die Organisation und Übertragung von Wissen ermöglichen, die durch Handeln erhalten werden. Beispiele sind Schnittstellen, die einen Menschen mit einer Maschine koppeln, um Dinge zu tun, die in der Regel ohne Hilfe gemacht werden, wie das Formen eines dreidimensionalen Objekts unter Verwendung mehrerer Modalität-Interaktionen mit einer Datenbank oder mit interaktivem Video, um es einem Schüler zu ermöglichen, sich visuell mit mathematischen Konzepten zu beschäftigen. Enactive Interface Design kann durch die Idee der Bewusstseinsbildung von affordances, das heißt, Optimierung des Bewusstseins für mögliche Aktionen für jemanden mit der enaktiven Schnittstelle. Diese Optimierung beinhaltet Sichtbarkeit, Ermöglichung und Feedback. Die enaktive Schnittstelle in der Figur interpretiert die manuelle Eingabe und liefert eine Antwort in perzeptuellen Begriffen in Form von Bildern, Tönen und haptischen Rückmeldungen. Das System wird aufgrund der Rückkopplungsschleife, in der die Systemantwort durch die Benutzereingabe entschieden wird, als aktiv bezeichnet, und die Benutzereingabe wird durch die wahrgenommenen Systemantworten gesteuert. Enaktive Schnittstellen sind neue Arten von Mensch-Computer-Schnittstelle, die das enaktive Wissen ausdrücken und übertragen, indem sie verschiedene sensorische Aspekte integrieren.
