Das Gegenteil eines endothermen Prozesses ist ein exothermer Prozeß, der freisetzt, "gibt Energie" in Form von Wärme aus. So bezieht sich in jedem Begriff das Präfix darauf, wo Wärme geht, während die Reaktion auftritt. Das Konzept wird häufig in den Naturwissenschaften angewendet, um z. B. chemische Reaktionen, bei denen Wärmeenergie in chemische Bindungsenergie umgewandelt wird. Die endotherme Analyse berücksichtigt nur die Enthalpieänderung einer Reaktion. Die volle Energieanalyse einer Reaktion ist die freie Gibbs-Energie, die neben der Enthalpie auch eine Entropie und einen Temperaturterm enthält. Eine Reaktion könnte ein Spontanverfahren bei einer bestimmten Temperatur sein, wenn die Produkte eine niedrigere freie Energie frei haben, auch wenn die Enthalpie der Produkte höher ist.

The opposite of an endothermic process is an exothermic process, one that releases, "gives out" energy in the form of heat. Thus in each term the prefix refers to where heat goes as the reaction occurs. The concept is frequently applied in physical sciences to, for example, chemical reactions, where thermal energy is converted to chemical bond energy. Endothermic analysis only accounts for the enthalpy change of a reaction. The full energy analysis of a reaction is the Gibbs free energy, which includes an entropy and temperature term in addition to the enthalpy. A reaction could be a Spontaneous process at a certain temperature if the products have a lower total free energy even if the enthalpy of the products is higher.
