Essener
Die Essener waren eine Sekte des Zweiten Tempel-Judentums, die aus dem 2. Jh. V.Chr. Nach dem 1. Jh. N.Chr. Blühte, von dem einige Gelehrte von den zadokitischen Priestern abgesondert wurden. Da sie viel weniger zahlten als die Pharisäer und die Sadduzäer, lebten die Essener in verschiedenen Städten, versammelten sich aber im gemeinschaftlichen Leben der Askese, der freiwilligen Armut und der täglichen Immersion. Viele getrennte, aber verwandte religiöse Gruppen dieser Ära teilten ähnliche mystische, eschatologische, messianische und asketische Überzeugungen. Diese Gruppen werden gemeinsam von verschiedenen Gelehrten als "Essener" bezeichnet. Josephus berichtet, dass Essenes in großer Zahl existierte, und Tausende lebten im ganzen römischen Judäa. Die Essener haben in der Neuzeit Ruhm erlangt, als Ergebnis einer Entdeckung einer umfangreichen Gruppe von religiösen Dokumenten, die als Todesmeer-Schriftrollen bekannt sind, die gemeinhin als Essener-Bibliothek geglaubt werden - obwohl es keinen Beweis dafür gibt, dass die Essener sie schrieben. Zu diesen Dokumenten gehören mehrere Kopien von Teilen der hebräischen Bibel, die bis etwa 300 v.Chr. Bis zu ihrer Entdeckung im Jahre 1946 unberührt waren. Einige Gelehrte bestreiten jedoch die Vorstellung, dass die Essener die Schriftrollen des Toten Meeres geschrieben haben.
