Euhemerismus

Euhemerismus ist eine rationalisierende Interpretationsmethode, die mythologische Konten als Reflexion historischer Ereignisse oder mythologischer Charaktere als historische Persönlichkeiten behandelt, die aber durch Nacherzählen und traditionelle Sitten geformt, übertrieben oder verändert wurden. Es wurde für seinen Schöpfer Euhemerus benannt. In neueren Literatur des Mythos, wie in Bulfinchs Mythologie, wird Euhemerismus die "historische Interpretation" der Mythologie genannt. Euhemerismus ist in der modernen akademischen Literatur als die Theorie definiert, dass Mythen verzerrte Berichte über echte historische Ereignisse sind. Euhemerus war nicht der Erste, der versucht, die Mythologie durch die Geschichte zu rationalisieren, da euhemeristische Ansichten in früheren Schriftstellern gefunden werden, darunter Xenophanes, Herodot, Hecataeus von Abdera und Ephorus. Allerdings wird Euhemerus als die Theorie in Anwendung auf alle Mythen, unter Berücksichtigung der Mythologie als "Geschichte in Verkleidung" gutgeschrieben.
