Søren Kierkegaard gilt allgemein als der erste existentialistische Philosoph, obwohl er den Begriff Existenzialismus nicht benutzt hat. Er schlug vor, dass jede einzelne - nicht Gesellschaft oder Religion - allein dafür verantwortlich ist, dem Leben Sinn zu geben und leidenschaftlich und aufrichtig zu leben. Der Existentialismus wurde in den Jahren nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg populär und beeinflusste neben der Philosophie, einschließlich Theologie, Drama, Kunst, Literatur und Psychologie, viele Disziplinen.
