Tintype
Ein Tintype, auch bekannt als Melainotyp oder Ferrotyp, ist ein Foto, das durch die Schaffung eines direkten Positivs auf einem dünnen Eisenblech, das mit einem dunklen Lack oder Emaille beschichtet ist, verwendet wird und als Träger für die photographische Emulsion verwendet wird. Tintypen genossen ihre breiteste Verwendung während der 1860er und 1870er Jahre, aber weniger Gebrauch des Mediums bestand bis in das frühe 20. Jahrhundert und es wurde als Neuheit im 21. wiederbelebt. Tintype-Portraits wurden zunächst in einem formalen Fotostudio, wie Daguerreotypen und anderen frühen Arten von Fotografien, gemacht, aber später wurden sie am häufigsten von Fotografen, die in Ständen oder Freiluft auf Messen und Karnevals arbeiten, sowie von reisenden Bürgersteigfotografen gemacht . Weil die lackierte Eisenstütze elastisch war und nicht trocknend brauchte, konnte eine Tintype entwickelt und fixiert und dem Kunden nur wenige Minuten nach der Aufnahme des Bildes übergeben werden. Der unmittelbare Vorgänger des Tintyps, der Ambrotyp, war der gleiche Vorgang mit einem Glas Glas als Träger. Das Glas war entweder von einer dunklen Farbe oder mit einem schwarzen Rücken versehen, so dass, wie bei einem Tintype, das unterbelichtete Negativbild in der Emulsion als positiv erschien.
