Ein Geschäftsjahr ist ein Zeitraum für die Berechnung des Jahresabschlusses in Unternehmen und anderen Organisationen. In vielen Rechtsordnungen verlangen die Regulierungsgesetze über die Rechnungslegung und die Besteuerung solche Berichte einmal pro zwölf Monate, verlangen aber nicht, dass die berichtete Frist ein Kalenderjahr darstellt. Die Geschäftsjahre variieren zwischen Unternehmen und Ländern. Das "Geschäftsjahr" kann sich auch auf das für die Einkommensteuerberichterstattung verwendete Jahr beziehen. Einige Unternehmen entscheiden, ihr Geschäftsjahr am selben Tag der Woche zu beenden, wobei der Tag derjenige ist, der einem bestimmten Datum am nächsten liegt. Unter einem solchen System werden einige Geschäftsjahre 52 Wochen und andere 53 Wochen haben. Hauptkonzerne, die diesen Ansatz annehmen, umfassen Cisco Systems. Dennoch ist das Geschäftsjahr mit dem Kalenderjahr für etwa 65% der börsennotierten Unternehmen in den USA und für die Mehrheit der Großkonzerne im Vereinigten Königreich und anderswo identisch. Viele Universitäten haben ein Geschäftsjahr, das im Sommer endet, um das Geschäftsjahr mit dem Schuljahr auszurichten, und weil die Schule in den Sommermonaten normalerweise weniger beschäftigt ist. In der nördlichen Hemisphäre ist dies Juli in einem Jahr bis Juni im nächsten Jahr.
