Flache Füße sind eine Haltungsdeformität, in der der Fußbogen zusammenbricht, wobei die gesamte Fußsohle in einen kompletten oder nahezu vollständigen Kontakt mit dem Boden kommt. In manchen Individuen entwickelt sich der Bogen einfach niemals in einem Fuß oder beiden Füßen. Der Bogen sorgt für eine elastische, federnde Verbindung zwischen dem Vorderfuß und dem Hinterfuß. Diese Vereinigung stellt sicher, dass eine Mehrheit der Kräfte, die bei der Gewichtslagerung des Fußes entstehen, abgeführt werden kann, bevor die Kraft die langen Knochen des Beines und des Oberschenkels erreicht. In pes planus wird der Kopf des Talusknochens medial und distal vom Navikular verlegt. Als Ergebnis werden das Frühjahrsband und die Sehne des Tibialis-posterioren Muskels gestreckt, so dass das Individuum mit pes planus die Funktion des medialen Längsbogens verliert. Wenn die MLA in den sitzenden und stehenden Positionen fehlt oder nicht funktionsfähig ist, hat die Individuen "starren" Flachfuß.
