Die Fluidisierung ist ein Verfahren, das der Verflüssigung ähnlich ist, wobei ein körniges Material von einem statischen festen Zustand in einen dynamischen flüssigkeitsähnlichen Zustand umgewandelt wird. Dieser Vorgang tritt auf, wenn ein Fluid durch das körnige Material hindurchgeführt wird. Wenn ein Gasstrom durch den Boden eines Bettes von festen Teilchen eingeführt wird, bewegt er sich durch das Bett über die leeren Räume zwischen den Teilchen. Bei niedrigen Gasgeschwindigkeiten ist der aerodynamische Widerstand auf jedem Teilchen ebenfalls niedrig, und so bleibt das Bett in einem festen Zustand. Durch die Erhöhung der Geschwindigkeit werden die aerodynamischen Schleppkräfte anfangen, den Gravitationskräften entgegenzuwirken, wodurch das Bett sich im Volumen erweitert, wenn sich die Teilchen voneinander entfernen. Durch weiteres Erhöhen der Geschwindigkeit wird es einen kritischen Wert erreichen, bei dem die Aufwärtskräuselungskräfte genau den abwärts gerichteten Gravitationskräften entsprechen, wodurch die Teilchen in dem Fluid suspendiert werden. Bei diesem kritischen Wert soll das Bett fluidisiert werden und wird ein fluidisches Verhalten zeigen.

Fluidization is a process similar to liquefaction whereby a granular material is converted from a static solid-like state to a dynamic fluid-like state. This process occurs when a fluid is passed up through the granular material. When a gas flow is introduced through the bottom of a bed of solid particles, it will move upwards through the bed via the empty spaces between the particles. At low gas velocities, aerodynamic drag on each particle is also low, and thus the bed remains in a fixed state. Increasing the velocity, the aerodynamic drag forces will begin to counteract the gravitational forces, causing the bed to expand in volume as the particles move away from each other. Further increasing the velocity, it will reach a critical value at which the upward drag forces will exactly equal the downward gravitational forces, causing the particles to become suspended within the fluid. At this critical value, the bed is said to be fluidized and will exhibit fluidic behavior.
