Francium ist ein chemisches Element mit dem Symbol Fr und der Ordnungszahl 87. Es war früher bekannt als Eka-Cäsium und Aktinium K. Es ist eines der beiden am wenigsten elektronegativen Elemente, das andere ist Cäsium. Francium ist ein hochradioaktives Metall, das in astatine, radium und radon zerfällt. Als Alkalimetall hat es ein Valenzelektron. Bulk-Franken wurde noch nie gesehen. Wegen des allgemeinen Erscheinungsbildes der anderen Elemente in seiner Periodensystemsäule wird davon ausgegangen, daß Francium als hochreflektierendes Metall erscheinen würde, wenn genug zusammen gesammelt werden könnte, um als Schüttgut oder Flüssigkeit angesehen zu werden. Allerdings ist die Vorbereitung einer solchen Probe unmöglich, da die extreme Hitze des Zerfalls sofort jede sichtbare Menge des Elements verdampfen würde. Francium wurde von Marguerite Perey in Frankreich im Jahre 1939 entdeckt. Es war das letzte Element, das zuerst in der Natur entdeckt wurde, anstatt durch die Synthese. Außerhalb des Labors ist Francium sehr selten, mit Spurenbeträgen in Uran- und Thoriumerzen, wo das Isotop francium-223 fortwährend bildet und zerfällt.
