Galantamin (Nivalin, Razadyne, Razadyne ER, Reminyl, Lycoremine) wird zur Behandlung von leichter bis mittelschwerer Alzheimer-Krankheit und verschiedenen anderen Gedächtnisstörungen, insbesondere von vaskulärem Ursprung, verwendet. Es ist ein Alkaloid, das synthetisch oder aus den Zwiebeln und Blüten von Galanthus caucasicus (kaukasischen Schneeglöckchen, Voronovs Schneeglöckchen), Galanthus woronowii (Amaryllidaceae) und verwandten Gattungen wie Narcissus (Narzisse), Leucojum (Schneeflocke) und Lycoris einschließlich Lycoris radiata erhalten wird (Rote Spinnenlilie). Studien in der modernen Medizin begannen in der Sowjetunion in den 1950er Jahren. Der Wirkstoff wurde extrahiert, identifiziert und untersucht, insbesondere in Bezug auf seine Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) -inhibierenden Eigenschaften. Der Großteil der Arbeit wurde von den sowjetischen Pharmakologen M. D. Maschkowski und R. P. Kruglikova-Lvova ab 1951 durchgeführt.
