Gapping in der Regel elides minimal ein endliches Verb und weiter alle nicht-endlichen Verben, die vorhanden sind. Dieses Material wird von den nicht-anfänglichen Konjunktionen einer Koordinatenstruktur "gapped". Das Greifen existiert in vielen Sprachen, aber keineswegs in allen von ihnen, und das Spalten wurde ausführlich untersucht und ist daher einer der verständlichsten Ellipsenmechanismen. Strippen wird als eine besondere Manifestation des gapping Mechanismus betrachtet, wo nur ein Rest in der gapped / stripped konjunct erscheint.
