Vergasung
Vergasung ist ein Prozess, der organische oder fossil bearbeitete kohlenstoffhaltige Materialien in Kohlenmonoxid, Wasserstoff und Kohlendioxid umwandelt. Dies wird erreicht, indem das Material bei hohen Temperaturen ohne Verbrennung mit einer kontrollierten Menge an Sauerstoff und / oder Dampf umgesetzt wird. Das entstehende Gasgemisch heißt Syngas oder Produzent Gas und ist selbst ein Brennstoff. Die aus der Vergasung und Verbrennung des resultierenden Gases abgeleitete Kraft wird als Quelle erneuerbarer Energie angesehen, wenn die vergasten Verbindungen aus Biomasse gewonnen wurden. Der Vorteil der Vergasung ist, dass die Verwendung des Syngases potentiell effizienter ist als die direkte Verbrennung des ursprünglichen Brennstoffs, da er bei höheren Temperaturen oder sogar in Brennstoffzellen verbrannt werden kann, so dass die thermodynamische Obergrenze für die von der Carnotschen Regel definierte Effizienz höher ist oder unzutreffend. Syngas kann direkt in Gasmotoren verbrannt, zur Herstellung von Methanol und Wasserstoff verwendet oder über das Fischer-Tropsch-Verfahren in synthetischen Brennstoff umgewandelt werden. Die Vergasung kann auch mit dem Material beginnen, das ansonsten wie biologisch abbaubare Abfälle entsorgt worden wäre.
