Gaze ist ein psychoanalytischer Begriff, der von Jacques Lacan in den populären Gebrauch gebracht wird, um den ängstlichen Zustand zu beschreiben, der mit dem Bewusstsein kommt, dass man ihn sehen kann. Die psychologische Wirkung, Lacan argumentiert, ist, dass das Subjekt verliert ein Maß an Autonomie bei der Erkenntnis, dass er oder sie ist ein sichtbares Objekt. Dieses Konzept ist mit seiner Theorie der Spiegelbühne verbunden, in der ein Kind, das einem Spiegel begegnet, erkennt, dass er oder sie ein äußeres Erscheinungsbild hat. Lacan schlägt vor, dass dieser Blickeffekt in ähnlicher Weise durch jeden denkbaren Gegenstand wie einen Stuhl oder einen Fernsehschirm erzeugt werden kann. Das heißt nicht, dass sich der Gegenstand optisch als Spiegel verhält; Stattdessen bedeutet das, dass das Bewusstsein eines Objekts ein Bewusstsein vermitteln kann, auch ein Objekt zu sein.
