Genetik
Genetik ist das Studium von Genen, Vererbung und Variation in lebenden Organismen. Es wird allgemein als ein Feld der Biologie betrachtet, aber es schneidet häufig mit vielen der Lebenswissenschaften und ist stark mit dem Studium der Informationssysteme verbunden. Der Vater der Genetik ist Gregor Mendel, ein österreichischer Mönchwissenschaftler. Mendel studierte "Traitvererbung", Muster in der Art, wie die Züge von den Eltern an die Nachkommen weitergegeben wurden. Er beobachtete, dass Organismen Eigenschaften durch diskrete "Erbschaftseinheiten" erben. Dieser Begriff, der heute noch verwendet wird, ist eine etwas zweideutige Definition von dem, was man als ein Gen bezeichnet. Traitvererbung und molekulare Vererbungsmechanismen von Genen sind nach wie vor ein Grundprinzip der Genetik im 21. Jahrhundert, aber die moderne Genetik hat sich über die Vererbung hinaus erweitert, um die Funktion und das Verhalten von Genen zu untersuchen. Genstruktur und Funktion, Variation und Verteilung werden im Kontext der Zelle, des Organismus und im Kontext einer Population untersucht. Die Genetik hat zu einer Reihe von Teilfeldern geführt, darunter Epigenetik und Populationsgenetik.
