Gourami
Gouramis oder Gouramies sind eine Familie, Osphronemidae, von Süßwasser-Perciformfischen. Die Fische stammen aus Asien, von Pakistan und Indien bis zum Malaiischen Archipel und nordöstlich nach Korea. Der Name "Gourami", aus javanischem Ursprung, wird auch für Fische der Familien Helostomatidae und Anabantidae verwendet. "Gouramis" ist ein Beispiel für einen redundanten Plural. Gourami ist bereits Plural in seiner Originalsprache. Viele Gouramis haben einen länglichen Strahl an der Vorderseite ihrer Beckenflossen. Viele Arten zeigen die elterliche Betreuung: einige sind Mundbrüder und andere, wie die siamesischen Kampffische, bauen Blasennester. Derzeit werden etwa 90 Arten erkannt, in vier Unterfamilien und etwa 15 Gattungen platziert. Der Name Polyacanthidae wurde auch für diese Familie verwendet. Einige Fische, die jetzt als Gouramis eingestuft wurden, wurden zuvor in der Familie Anabantidae platziert. Die Unterfamilie Belontiinae wurde vor kurzem von der Familie Belontiidae degradiert. Als Labyrinthfische haben Gouramis ein lungenartiges Labyrinthorgan, das es ihnen ermöglicht, Luft zu schlucken und atmosphärischen Sauerstoff zu verwenden. Diese Orgel ist eine wichtige Neuerung für Fische, die oft warmes, flaches, sauerstoffarmes Wasser bewohnen.
