Grapeshot
In Artillerie ist ein Grapeshot eine Art von Schuss, der nicht ein solides Element ist, sondern eine Masse von kleinen Metallkugeln oder Schnecken, die fest in eine Leinentasche gepackt sind. Es wurde sowohl im Land als auch im Seekrieg verwendet. Beim Zusammenbau glichen die Kugeln einer Traubengruppe, daher der Name. Beim Brennen breiteten sich die Bälle aus der Mündung aus und verliefen einer Riesenschrotflinte. Grapeshot war verheerend wirksam gegen Massen Infanterie in kurzer Reichweite. Es wurde an wilde Infanteriegebühren schnell gebraucht. Kanonen würden einen festen Schuss abfeuern, um feindliche Artillerie und Truppen auf längere Strecke anzugreifen und zu Trauben zu wechseln, wenn sie oder in der Nähe Truppen aufgeladen wurden. Kanister erschossen, auch als Fall erschossen, wurde in einem Blech- oder Messing-Container verpackt, eventuell von einem Holztabot geführt. Kanisterbälle mussten nicht durch den Holzrumpf eines Schiffes schlagen, also waren es kleiner und zahlreicher. Die spätere Schrapnellschale war ähnlich, aber mit einer viel größeren Reichweite. Scattershot ist eine improvisierte Form von Grapeshot, die Kettenglieder, Nägel, Glasscherben, Felsen oder andere ähnliche Objekte wie die Projektile verwendet.
