Halbton
Halbton ist die reprographische Technik, die kontinuierliche Tonbilder durch die Verwendung von Punkten simuliert, die entweder in der Größe, in der Form oder im Abstand variieren und so einen gradientenähnlichen Effekt erzeugen. "Halbton" kann auch verwendet werden, um sich speziell auf das Bild zu beziehen, das durch diesen Prozess erzeugt wird. Wo kontinuierliche Tonbilder einen unendlichen Bereich von Farben oder Grautönen enthalten, reduziert der Halbtonprozess visuelle Reproduktionen auf ein Bild, das mit nur einer Tintenfarbe gedruckt wird, in Punkten unterschiedlicher Größe. Diese Reproduktion beruht auf einer grundlegenden optischen Täuschung, dass diese winzigen Halbtonpunkte durch das menschliche Auge in glatte Töne gemischt werden. Auf mikroskopischer Ebene besteht der entwickelte Schwarz-Weiß-Fotofilm aus nur zwei Farben und nicht aus unendlich vielen kontinuierlichen Tönen. Für Details siehe Filmkorn. So wie sich die Farbfotografie mit dem Hinzufügen von Filtern und Filmschichten entwickelt hat, wird der Farbdruck durch Wiederholen des Halbtonprozesses für jede subtraktive Farbe - am häufigsten mit dem sogenannten "CMYK-Farbmodell") ermöglicht. Die halb-opake Eigenschaft der Tinte erlaubt Halbtonpunkte der verschiedenen Farben, um eine andere optische Effekt-vollfarbige Bilder zu verursachen.
