Helios
Helios war die Personifikation der Sonne in der griechischen Mythologie. Homer nennt ihn oft Titan oder Hyperion, während Hesiod und die Homerische Hymne ihn als Sohn der Titanen Hyperion und Theia oder Euryphaessa und Bruder der Göttinnen Selene, des Mondes und Eos, der Morgendämmerung, trennen. Ovid nennt ihn auch Titan. Helios wurde als ein hübscher Gott beschrieben, der mit der glänzenden Aureole der Sonne gekrönt wurde, die jeden Tag den Wagen der Sonne über den Himmel fuhr, um den See zu kreuzenden Ozean und durch den Weltmeer nachts in den Osten zurückzukehren. In der homerischen Hymne an Helios soll Helios einen goldenen Wagen fahren, der von Rössern gezogen wird; Und Pindar spricht von Helios "Feuer-Darting-Ross". Später erhielten die Pferde feurige Namen: Pyrois, Aeos, Aethon und Phlegon. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde Helios zunehmend mit dem Gott des Lichtes identifiziert, Apollo. Trotz ihres Synkretismus wurden sie aber auch oft als zwei verschiedene Götter angesehen. Das Äquivalent von Helios in der römischen Mythologie war Sol, speziell Sol Invictus.
