Ein Helium-Blitz ist die auslaufende Fusion von Helium im Kern von Niedrigmasstern von weniger als etwa 2,25 Sonnenmassen und größer als etwa 0,5 Sonnenmassen oder auf der Oberfläche eines anspruchsvollen weißen Zwergsterns. Ein Heliumblitz tritt in diesen Situationen auf, weil das Helium degeneriert ist, was bedeutet, dass es durch den quantenmechanischen Druck anstelle des thermischen Drucks gegen die Schwerkraft gestützt wird. So fällt eine Erhöhung der Temperatur in dem Material, das einer Verschmelzung unterworfen wird, nicht, um das Material zu erweitern und dadurch zu kühlen, und es gibt keine Regulierung der Fusionsgeschwindigkeit. Die sehr hohe Dichte beschleunigt auch die Fusionsrate. Die anschließende, auslaufende Kernreaktion emittiert Energie mit einer Rate, die mit der ganzen Milchstraße vergleichbar ist, aber nur für einige Sekunden. Bei normal niedrigen Massenstars wird die Energie vom Stern aufgenommen und von außen nicht sichtbar. Der Prozeß endet, wenn das Material bis zu dem Punkt erwärmt wird, wo der thermische Druck wieder dominant wird, und das Material dehnt sich dann aus und kühlt ab. Der Heliumblitz, der durch Beobachtung unentdeckt ist, wird durch astrophysikalische Modelle beschrieben.
