Herculaneum
Im Schatten des Vesuvs gelegen, war Herculaneum eine alte römische Stadt, die durch vulkanische pyroklastische Strömungen im Jahre 79 n. Chr. Zerstört wurde. Seine Ruinen befinden sich in der Gemeinde Ercolano, Kampanien, Italien. Es ist am berühmtesten, mit Pompeji, Stabiae, Oplontis und der Nachbarschaft von Monte Bursaccio in Boscoreale, in dem Ausbruch des Vesuvs im Jahr 79, der ihn in überhitztem pyroklastischem Material begraben hat, Es ist auch berühmt als eine der wenigen alten Städte, die jetzt in fast seiner ursprünglichen Pracht gesehen werden kann; Im Gegensatz zu Pompeji, wurde es tief genug begraben, um die oberen Geschichten von Gebäuden zu bewahren.
