Vico und des französischen Essayisten Michel de Montaigne und wurden mit der Dialektik von G. W. F. Hegel, einflussreich im Europa des 19. Jahrhunderts, voll entwickelt. Die von Hegel beeinflussten Schriften von Karl Marx enthalten auch Historismus. Der Begriff ist auch mit den empirischen Sozialwissenschaften und der Arbeit von Franz Boas verbunden.
