Die Forschungsinteressen der Historiker verändern sich im Laufe der Zeit, und in den letzten Jahrzehnten gab es eine Verschiebung von der traditionellen diplomatischen, wirtschaftlichen und politischen Geschichte zu neueren Ansätzen, vor allem sozialen und kulturellen Studien. Von 1975 bis 1995 stieg der Anteil der Professoren der Geschichte an amerikanischen Universitäten, die sich mit der Sozialgeschichte identifizierten, von 31% auf 41%, während der Anteil der politischen Historiker von 40% auf 30% sank.
