Hypermetabolismus
Hypermetabolismus ist der physiologische Zustand der erhöhten Rate der metabolischen Aktivität und ist durch eine abnorme Zunahme der körpereigenen basalen metabolischen Rate gekennzeichnet. Hypermetabolismus tritt typischerweise nach erheblichen Verletzungen des Körpers auf. In Krankenhäusern und Institutionen sind die häufigsten Ursachen Infektionen, Sepsis, Verbrennungen, multiple Traumata, Fieber, Langknochenbrüche, Hyperthyreose, verlängerte Steroidtherapie, Chirurgie und Knochenmarksverpflanzungen. Hypermetabolismus kann vor allem im Gehirn nach traumatischen Hirnverletzungen auftreten. Die Ursache und Lage der hypermetabolischen Symptome im Körper kann durch PET-Scan genau erkannt werden. Symptome werden in der Regel nachlassen, sobald die zugrunde liegende Krankheit oder Verletzung behandelt wird.
